This time of year is filled with a lot of body talk. It begins with talk around what we ate, didn’t eat, or ate-too-much-of around the holidays and ends with New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and tone up fast! It’s hard to silence all of these messages about what our bodies should and shouldn’t look like and it’s especially hard to even know what to do about all these conflicting messages.
I recently finished reading the book Beauty Sick by Renee Engeln about the twisted culture we have created telling girls and women the most important thing they can be is beautiful. Every page rang with truth and heartfelt stories that I could relate with all too well. I often found myself enraged and heartbroken that this is the world we live in now and that this is how our girls are growing up.
With the start of the New Year, and subsequent start of diets, fitness challenges, and efforts to become smaller, we need to be fighting beauty sickness now. At the end of the book, Renee shares how to combat beauty sickness and the steps we can be taking today to build a world more conducive to all the amazing things girls and women are capable of achieving.
